For one, this is not the usual wishy-washy MC that can't pick which girl in the harem he loves. The story is riddled with most of the cliches that you would expect, but there were a few things here and there that made it stand out. That reputation is somewhat deserved, but more for its source material, which is your typical uninspired "guy goes to magic school and is called the weakest but is actually the strongest and all the girls want to fuck him" light novel, than for the adaptation, which dramatically elevates the material. This series is more or less infamous for being generic, to the point that it aired nearly an identical first episode to another magic school battle harem in the same season. As a result, it's very interesting and well-crafted, but within the confines of its genre, the much-maligned (and often deservedly so) magic school battle harem. Rakudai is one of those shows where they just let a good director go hard on fundamentally mediocre material. If not, you won't find much to enjoy here. Recommendation: If you like magic school battle harems, this is one of the best.
